John Sykes (29 July 1959 – 20 January 2025) was a British rock guitarist and songwriter whose electrifying style and melodic sensibility left an indelible mark on hard rock and heavy metal. Born in Reading, England, Sykes began playing guitar at 14, inspired by blues legends like Eric Clapton.

He first gained attention with Tygers of Pan Tang, contributing to their albums Spellbound and Crazy Nights in the early 1980s. In 1982, Sykes joined Thin Lizzy, playing on their final studio album, Thunder and Lightning, and participating in their farewell tour. His tenure with Whitesnake was particularly notable; he co-wrote and played on their 1987 self-titled album, which achieved massive commercial success.

After departing Whitesnake, Sykes formed Blue Murder, releasing two albums that showcased his skills as both guitarist and vocalist.
Sykes's solo work further demonstrated his versatility, blending hard rock with melodic elements. His influence extended beyond his recordings; in 2006, Gibson honored him with a signature Les Paul model, reflecting his status as a guitar icon.

He passed away on 20 January 2025 after a battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire musicians worldwide.
